Experience

SumIt Software

Dec 2022 – Current

SumIt is the backend operating system for family offices - the firms that manage the finances of one or several wealthy families. Our platform is a multi-entity general ledger at its core, and it extends across the full workflow these firms need to run on every day.

CTO and Cofounder

Dec 2022 – Current
  • Took SumIt from idea to launch in 6 months and grew it into a revenue-generating, multi-entity accounting platform for U.S. family offices (Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Sidekiq, Hotwire). Own product vision and the engineering roadmap alongside the CEO.
  • Built and lead a 4-person senior engineering team, replacing story-point estimation with throughput and cycle-time tracking to measure team velocity and help with delivery.
  • Built the security and compliance program (SOC 2 Type II, device management, penetration testing) and the integrations (Addepar, Bill.com, Plaid) required to sell into regulated finance. Shipped one of the first MCP servers for a family office accounting platform, positioning SumIt as a system of record for AI agents.

Rhino Labs

Aug 2019 – Jul 2022

Rhino provides an insurance product to real estate companies, allowing them to forgo traditional rental deposits from tenants, and offering renters an insurance product that provides similar utility for a regular fee.

Staff Software Engineer

Jan 2022 – Jul 2022
  • Hosted mob programming sessions where I debugged production issues (using Datadog and Rollbar) which lead to team members getting comfortable with our monitoring and alerting infrastructure. Effort lead to an 80% reduction of noise on Rollbar in a span of 4 months.
  • Lead feature design and implementation of a generalized framework of our property management software integrations (external SOAP APIs), reducing the lead time of adding new property managers to the platform from 1 month down to 1 day.

Tech Lead/Engineering Manager

Jul 2020 – Dec 2021
  • Lead large effort to refactor core components of the technology stack (Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis, React), allowing the business to add more financial capacity and reducing the likelihood of having to pause writing business. Effort required collaboration between 3 engineering teams and other business stakeholders.
  • Lead creation of engineering career ladder, which set up a framework to guide performance review cycle discussions. Hosted feedback sessions with other engineering managers and tech leads.
  • Managed a team of 5 engineers, helping them grow in their careers and leading to 2 promotions.
  • Grew the team from 5 to 40 engineers in 2 years. Implemented interview processes including a question bank for various stages of the interview.

Senior Software Engineer

Aug 2019 – Jul 2021
  • Increased visibility into the Ruby on Rails app by adding and configuring Datadog, allowing the team to add alerts to notify when the app experiences anomalies thereby reducing the acknowledgement time of production issues.
  • Lead migration effort of the production PostgreSQL database from an AWS RDS instance to a Heroku hosted database, reducing costs by 60%.
  • Mentored 3 junior engineers by providing guidance and sponsorship.

Capsule

Jan 2019 – Aug 2019

Capsule is an online pharmacy that offers same-day medication delivery, with couriers delivering prescriptions by bike or by car, and also provides reporting on medication adherence.

Senior Software Engineer

Jan 2019 – Aug 2019
  • Containerized the web stack (Python/Django, Postgres, RabbitMQ) using Docker which drastically decreased the time it took to set up a local development environment (from at least a day, down to an hour or less). Additionally this allowed us to move the stack over to Kubernetes enabling quicker horizontal scaling.
  • Developed an adapter layer that sits between our back end API and our third party Pharmacy Management System (PMS), making it easier for us to swap out PMS's. Project was finished ahead of schedule, and allowed us to add an additional PMS as part of the company's expansion efforts.
  • Grew the team from 20 to 40+ engineers in 6 months. Took lead on implementing new development processes including adding a linter as part of CI, enabling Github groups, enforcing coding standards, and determining best practices for Python and Django.

Blue Apron

Jun 2016 – Dec 2018

Blue Apron is a grocery delivery service company that offers fresh, chef-designed recipes to customers.

Senior Software Engineer

Jul 2018 – Dec 2018
  • Lead a project to remove fulfillment concerns out of consumer facing app (Ruby on Rails, Postgres). Project introduces Kafka for publishing and subscribing to messages (DeliveryBoy, Proto format) between the new consumer and fulfillment systems. Project required coordination across 4 engineering teams. Enabled opportunities to add 2 third party vendors to our e-Commerce platform which resulted in a material increase in revenue.
  • Implemented a plan flexing feature allowing customers to change their menus on a per order basis, resulting in a 5% increase in customer retention, and a 3% increase in order rate. Project required heavy refactoring of critical parts of the codebase and in the process we increased our test coverage (RSpec) by 10%.
  • Optimized site performance by identifying slow running SQL queries (Postgres), analyzing query plans, and rewriting queries to be more performant. Reduced response time on some API endpoints by 30%.
  • Regularly sit in meetings with senior management to provide a technical perspective and help develop requirements on various company initiatives.
  • Mentor 2 junior members of the engineering team by conducting bi-weekly 1-on-1s and providing career advice. Assist with the interviewing, hiring, and training of software engineers.

Software Engineer

Jun 2016 – Jul 2018
  • Served as technical lead on large cross-organizational project to expand the range of product offerings for customers, allowing customers to order any combination of meals. The project involved up to 5 separate work streams, and up to 10 developers at times. Project resulted in an 8% increase in customer order rate, which lead to a material increase in revenue.
  • Implemented a system allowing culinary admins to attach customer facing badges to recipes (Ruby on Rails, Ember, React, Postgres), including an A/B testing framework (Optimizely). Project resulted in 5% absolute increase in recipe opt-in rate.
  • Built an expandable meal preferences system, working closely with our data team to ensure data model could be fed into their ML model to generate recommended products for customers.
  • Introduced and enforced Ruby on Rails best practices for working on the consumer team codebase, including writing zero downtime database schema/data migrations.
